With „Am Grund,“ saxophonist and composer Gregor Schor presents a work that takes jazz seriously, both in its freedom and its formal rigor. Gregor Schor writes for the ensemble with the openness of a sketcher. The pencil replaces the baton: the lines are clearly drawn, yet they allow for correction, expansion, and spontaneity. The result is pieces that are, on the one hand, precisely constructed, yet, on the other, permeable to the individual’s signature style.
This band is not an orchestra that simply delivers. It is a toolbox containing everything from surgical precision to a sledgehammer. „Am Grund“ is a jazz album that delves deep, but not into the darkness, but rather into the interplay of composition and improvisation, individual and ensemble, freedom and form.
